The Center Mission & Objectives

Mission Statement:
The Roy J. Carver Center for Comparative Genomics is a research center within the Department of Biology on the campus of The University of Iowa. Our mission is to promote the understanding of biological diversity through research with a specific emphasis on molecular and population level processes, and through comparative analysis of genes and genomes.

The Center is organized into Research Working Groups that represent key areas in Comparative Genomics. Each working group includes researchers with both empirical and theoretical interests. A key aspect of our mission is to facilitate the rapid integration of empirical and theoretical research using modern computational biological tools. The goal is to harness advances and to use them to ask novel interdisciplinary questions related to molecular evolution and population genetic research.

Objectives:
The Center supports research and training of graduate and undergraduate students through close collaboration with the curriculum in Biology and through cooperative interactions with other Departments and faculty members on campus. The University of Iowa and the State of Iowa have committed themselves to the future development of the Department of Biology through the construction of a new state-of-the-art building and renovation of key support facilities in existing buildings. The commitment of financial, infrastructural and new faculty positions to the Department of Biology, as well as the rapid development of technologies make it possible to solve major outstanding questions in biology, in this Center.
