Summer Undergraduate Workshop on Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics |
Workshop funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with Department of Biology (UI) and the Roy J. Carver
Center for Comparative Genomics (CCG).
This undergraduate workshop is designed to introduce a small group of students to evolutionary genomics by exposing them to
a sample of methods and concepts in molecular evolution, population genetics and comparative genomics. The workshop is
practical, with extensive "wet lab" experience on modern molecular techniques (PCR, DNA sequencing, etc.), and will be
complemented with lectures from faculty associated with the CCG and computer laboratory classes. Applications from women
and underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged. Complete and partial scholarships to defray housing
and stipend are available.
The workshop is organized by UI faculty member Josep M. Comeron and it is part of a NSF Research Grant to investigate
patterns and rates of evolution in Drosophila genes (DEB 03-44209).
